Search Clark County Court Records

Clark County court records are public files held by the Eighth Judicial District Court and, for limited matters, by the Justice Courts and Municipal Courts that serve southern Nevada. Most people search for Clark County court records through the Odyssey Portal Smart Search, which covers civil, criminal, family, probate, and juvenile cases filed at the District Court level. Lower-court records, marriage records, and jail custody all use separate systems. A successful search for Clark County court records starts with matching the case type to the right court level and the right portal. Sealed and exempt cases do not appear online, so the Odyssey Portal result is not always the final word.

Types of Clark County Court Records

Clark County District Court handles the full range of general-jurisdiction case types. Each type generates its own set of public records, and each has its own access rules. Knowing the category of a case helps narrow which portal to use and which fields to expect in the results.

Civil records include filed complaints, summonses, answers, motions, discovery-related filings where available, orders, judgments, satisfaction of judgment, and appeals notices. Civil cases in District Court may cover contract disputes, tort claims, business litigation, real property, and injunctions. Smaller civil claims, small claims, and evictions are Justice Court cases.

Criminal records at the felony level include complaints, indictments, informations, arraignment records, minutes, motions, plea agreements where public, bond and bail entries, sentencing documents, and judgments of conviction. District Court handles felony trial proceedings. Justice Courts take preliminary hearings for felonies and handle misdemeanors. Municipal Courts cover city ordinance and misdemeanor matters inside incorporated cities such as Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, and Mesquite.

Family court records include divorce petitions, custody orders, child support filings, paternity actions, adoption proceedings, protective orders, and related family matters. Divorce is a District Court family case. Sensitive child information, financial details, and domestic-violence victim addresses may be sealed or redacted even when the rest of the case is open.

Probate records include wills, petitions for probate, estate administration documents, letters testamentary and letters of administration, creditor notices, inventories, accountings, guardianship and conservatorship records, trust disputes, and orders. Probate runs as a specialty docket inside the Eighth Judicial District Court. The Smart Search case-type filter for Probate returns these cases.

Traffic and misdemeanor records track citations, complaint and ticket numbers, alleged violations, court dates, pleas, dispositions, fines, fees, failure-to-appear status, and payment history. These live in Justice Court or Municipal Court, not District Court. The court named on the ticket controls where the record lives. Court traffic records are separate from Nevada DMV driver history records, which track license points and suspensions at the state level.

Juvenile records are heavily restricted under Nevada law. Juvenile delinquency, dependency, and abuse and neglect cases may return no result in public portals even when a case is active. Public searches should not expose juvenile details, and a no-result response is expected and normal for this category.

What Clark County Court Records Show

When a public user opens a case in the Odyssey Portal, a set of standard fields appears on screen. Not every field is visible on every case type. Sealed and exempt cases do not appear at all. The table below maps the fields a public user is likely to see for a non-restricted Clark County District Court case, along with a short note on what each field means.

Field What It Shows
Case Number Unique court identifier, usually year-coded with a case-type code and sequence number.
Case Type Adult Criminal, Civil, Family Domestic, Juvenile, or Probate.
Court Location District Court; confirms the filing is in the Eighth Judicial District Court system.
Case Status Open, Active, Closed, Dismissed, Transferred, Reopened, Appealed, Warrant, Search Warrant Filed, Search Warrant Closed, and other internal values.
Filing Date Date the case was opened; searchable by start and end date in the portal filter.
Parties Plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, and business parties with name components.
Attorneys Counsel of record; searchable by attorney name and bar number in the portal.
Judicial Officer Judge or commissioner assigned to the case; filterable in the portal by name.
Docket Events Chronological list of filings, hearings, orders, motions, and judgments entered in the case.
Criminal Identifiers Date of birth, FBI Number, SO Number, State ID Number, and Booking Number where applicable to a criminal-party search.
Documents Some filings are purchasable online; others need registration, attorney subscription, or direct court authorization.
Restrictions and Redactions Sealed cases and exempt information do not appear; Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, victim details, minors' names, and protected identifiers are redacted from public views.

A case status of Warrant or Search Warrant Filed does not mean the portal displays the underlying warrant content. Warrant detail is often restricted. A status of Dismissed without Prejudice means the case closed but may be refiled. Dismissed with Prejudice means the same claim cannot be refiled. Disposition is the final outcome of the case or a specific charge within it. Docket and Minute Order entries mark actions the court took after a hearing.

Public Access Framework for Clark County Court Records

Nevada law starts from a position of openness. The Nevada Public Records Act in NRS Chapter 239 opens government records to public inspection unless a specific statute, court rule, privilege, or confidentiality doctrine closes them. Court records follow this baseline and layer on top of it the Nevada Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure, court-specific access policies, and case-specific sealing orders. A denied public-records request can be challenged through statutory remedies and judicial review.

Key Statutes for Clark County Court Records Access

NRS 239.010 – Nevada public books and records are open unless a law or court rule declares them confidential. This is the backbone public-records provision and applies to county agencies and courts where no other law restricts access.

NRS 239.0107 – Governs agency response timing and availability duties for public-record requests. Applies to requests directed to county departments, LVMPD records, and detention records rather than directly to the court file system.

NRS 3.220 – District Court clerks and records functions are rooted in this chapter, setting the authority for the Eighth Judicial District Court Clerk to maintain, copy, and certify court records in Clark County.

Court documents at the Eighth Judicial District Court are accessible through the Odyssey Portal for status and some purchasable filings. Certified copies require a formal request to the District Court Clerk. Fees for plain copies, certified copies, and exemplified copies follow the clerk's current fee schedule. Document purchases through the portal use a separate cart workflow and per-page or per-file charges. The official fee schedule should be confirmed at the clerk's office before ordering, as amounts can change without much advance notice.

Access is tiered at the portal level. Standard public access is the default for non-restricted cases. Attorney subscription access provides additional features and batch tools. Justice partner extended access covers authorized government agencies and partners. Pro se sealed case access is a separate path for parties in sealed matters who need to review their own files. The portal lists links to instructions for each tier on its main landing page.

Note: Fees for large or staff-intensive records requests may include extraordinary use charges under NRS 239.052 on top of the basic per-page copy rate when significant staff time or resources are needed to compile the records.

Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Clark County

Not every court case in Clark County is open to the public, even in a state that favors access. Nevada law defines several restricted categories, and these records will not appear in online searches regardless of how the query is structured. A no-result search on the Odyssey Portal does not prove a case never existed.

Juvenile records are confidential under NRS Chapter 62H. Access is limited to the juvenile, parents, counsel, authorized agencies, and those with a court order. Public portals may return nothing even when a juvenile case is active and ongoing. Sealing of juvenile records follows its own eligibility rules within the same chapter.

Sealed adult criminal records are governed by NRS Chapter 179. Nevada uses record sealing, not expungement, as its primary relief mechanism for adult criminal cases. Eligibility depends on the offense, the outcome, completion of sentence, the waiting period, and whether any charges remain pending. A successful petition produces a court order directing agencies to seal the record. Once sealed, public portals should not display the case at all. Common denial reasons include an ineligible offense type, unpaid obligations, pending new charges, or an insufficient waiting period.

Child abuse, neglect, and dependency records are restricted under NRS Chapter 432B. Child protective investigation information and dependency court filings are not ordinary public court records and are not accessible through public portals.

Mental health proceedings are confidential under NRS Chapter 433A. Crisis admission, commitment, and treatment records are not shown in public court searches. A mental health case is a different matter entirely from a criminal or civil court file.

Additional restricted categories include adoption files under Nevada adoption statutes, domestic violence victim addresses and safety information redacted from protective orders, grand jury proceedings before an indictment becomes public, search warrants sealed during active investigations, and personal identifiers such as Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and minors' names redacted from otherwise public documents. Attorney work product and attorney-client privileged communications are not public even when referenced in an open case file.

For Clark County residents seeking to seal an eligible record, the Civil Law Self-Help Center carries sealing petition forms and procedural guidance. The court self-help center does not provide legal advice, but staff can answer questions about the filing process.

In-Person Clark County Court Record Requests

The Odyssey Portal covers public case status and some purchasable filings, but certified copies, older offline records, and access to restricted or sealed material require going through the District Court Clerk in person or by written request. Certified copies carry the court's official seal and are required for most legal proceedings, immigration applications, and appeals. An uncertified copy printed from the portal is not a substitute for a certified copy in proceedings that demand an official document.

Clark County Court Records in the Nevada Judiciary System

The Nevada Judiciary official site provides statewide court structure, links to the Nevada Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, district court directories, rules, and public guidance for the full Nevada court system. Clark County's Eighth Judicial District Court is the largest district in the state and operates within this statewide framework. Appeals from the Eighth Judicial District move first to the Nevada Court of Appeals and then, where permitted, to the Nevada Supreme Court.

Federal vs Clark County State Court Records

Clark County has both state courts and federal courts operating in the same downtown Las Vegas area, and the two systems are completely separate. A case filed in the Eighth Judicial District Court will not appear in any federal database. A federal case will not appear in the Odyssey Portal. Identifying which system a case belongs to is the first step before starting any search.

Federal courts in Clark County include the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Nevada, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Federal cases cover federal crimes, civil rights claims, federal-question civil suits, diversity jurisdiction, federal agency litigation, prisoner civil-rights petitions, and federal habeas matters. The federal courthouse in Las Vegas is the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse, 333 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas, NV 89101, a short distance from the Regional Justice Center where state court business is conducted.

Federal records are searched through PACER and CM/ECF, not the Clark County Odyssey Portal. PACER charges per-page fees for accessing federal records with fee waivers available in some circumstances. The District of Nevada CM/ECF system is the active docket and filing system for that federal court. Bankruptcy cases have their own docket within the federal system at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Nevada. The U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada handles federal criminal prosecutions through the justice.gov/usao-nv office page.

The image below shows the PACER federal records portal used for accessing cases from the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada and federal courts nationwide.

The PACER system requires registration and applies per-page federal records fees. Clark County residents searching for federal cases should register at pacer.uscourts.gov and search by party name or case number within the District of Nevada. The District of Nevada CM/ECF portal is shown below.

District of Nevada CM/ECF electronic filing and docket system for Clark County federal court records

The CM/ECF system at ecf.nvd.uscourts.gov is the electronic filing and docket portal for the District of Nevada and has no connection to the Clark County Odyssey Portal used for state District Court records. Use CM/ECF for any federal civil or criminal case. Federal custody is also separate from local jail records. A person in federal prison does not appear in the CCDC in-custody search or the Nevada DOC offender search. Use the Bureau of Prisons locator at bop.gov/inmateloc for individuals in federal custody.

Note: If a case was originally filed in state court and removed to federal court, the federal CM/ECF docket is the correct place to look for all subsequent filings, not the Clark County Odyssey Portal.
